New York, 1917: Landship Recruit on Union Square

The U.S.S. Recruit, a wooden battleship erected by the Navy, served as a World War I recruiting station at Union Square from 1917 to 1920, when it "set sail" for Coney Island.

The Great floods Johnstown Pennsylvania 1889

Johnstown Pennsylvania 1889 - The floods killed 1000's. This particular photo is of  the John Schultz house at Johnstown, PA after the flood. Neatly skewered by a huge tree uprooted by the flood, the house floated down from Union Street to the end of Main. Six people, including Schultz himself, were inside the house when the flood hit. All of them survived.

Capt Barnes records in his diary: 'After Church this morning the whole Battalion was marched up to the Pyramid (Old Cheops) and we had a photo took or at least several of them.' This well known and very popular photograph was originally lent to the Australian War Memorial in the 1930s by Colonel K McLennan MBE.
