The Great floods Johnstown Pennsylvania 1889

Johnstown Pennsylvania 1889 - The floods killed 1000's. This particular photo is of  the John Schultz house at Johnstown, PA after the flood. Neatly skewered by a huge tree uprooted by the flood, the house floated down from Union Street to the end of Main. Six people, including Schultz himself, were inside the house when the flood hit. All of them survived.

The group of over 685 soldiers are spread over the side of the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) near Mena camp. Capt Barnes records in his diary: 'After Church this morning the whole Battalion was marched up to the Pyramid (Old Cheops) and we had a photo took or at least several of them.' This well known and very popular photograph was originally lent to the Australian War Memorial in the 1930s by Colonel K McLennan MBE.

Hollywood Land - 1923

A slightly different view of Hollywood. This was taken around 1923 when movie making in Hollywood was in its infancy. A boom was taking place and building just starting. Notice the famous sign is a little longer than we are used to!

Eskilstuna Sweden: Steam Trains


Eskilstuna is a city in the North East of Sweden. I am guessing this picture is taken around the late 40's. Wooden station and steam trains carrying rocks. All the staff are posing for the photo and if you look carefully the station platform is full of people too.
